Villages of the Orara Valley

Just a short drive from Coffs Harbour lies a network of hinterland villages nestled in the picturesque Orara Valley, all connected by the meandering Orara River.

Glenreagh

As the oldest village in the Orara Valley, Glenreagh boasts a rich history dating back to the 1850s when European settlers were drawn to the area for its abundant timber forests and the discovery of gold. Today, visitors can immerse themselves in the village's heritage by taking a leisurely stroll through its historic streets.

Nana Glen

Nana Glen is a charming historic village nestled in the picturesque Orara Valley. The name "Nana Glen" originates from the Gumbaynggirr word, Ngarla, which translates to "two-tailed lizard." 

Coramba

The charming village of Coramba is renowned for its warm country hospitality, making it the perfect destination for a relaxing hinterland day trip.

Upper Orara & Karangi

The villages of Upper Orara and Karangi serve as the gateway to the picturesque Orara Valley, boasting lush rolling hills and crystal-clear waterways. The scenic drive sets the perfect backdrop for unwinding and immersing yourself in the beauty of nature.

Ulong & Lowanna

Lowanna and Ulong sit at 1700 feet and experience much cooler conditions than Coffs Harbour. The drive from Coffs Harbour climbs the Dorrigo Mountain escarpment through towering subtropical rainforest and into the lush, undulating fields along the plateau.

Orara Valley Tourist Trail

Drive West on Coramba Road out of Coffs Harbour to start your journey on the Orara Valley Tourist trail. Take the Upper Orara loop at Mount Browne Road and you will soon be surrounded by tall trees and luscious rainforest. Continue around the picturesque loop and soak up the scenery past the many farms at Dairyville, joining back up to the Orara Way just past Karangi dam.

Visit the village of Coramba

Stop for a counter lunch at the Coramba Hotel, taking in the magnificent landscape from the beer garden. Take the self-guided history walk and discover buildings and stories of the past. Explore the sub tropical rainforest on the Coramba Nature Reserve walk and photograph the delicate flora and fauna on the way.

Continue your drive to Nana Glen

The changing country views include plenty of blueberry and dairy farms. Depending on the season, some even offer their produce at roadside stalls along the Orara Valley Way. Stop at the Idle In cafe for some tasty treats and coffee. While you're there, be sure to get a pic of the Nana two tails timber sculpture of the famous legendary lizard, crafted by local artist Ian Watson.

The next stop along the way is Glenreagh

Pose for a selfie at the Golden Dog Hotel with the tall standing statue over a mosaic representation of the landscape. Take the opportunity to enjoy a delicious pub lunch with a frothy beer or two! Visit the Glenreagh Memorial Museum and discover the stories of the heritage railway line and the heady days of gold mining.  Indeed, the history of the area is apparent as you explore the oldest village of the Orara Valley.

Backtrack along the Orara Valley way towards Coramba and turn onto the Eastern Dorrigo Way. Your next stop is the small village of Lowanna with a General Store and Cafe with fuel. While you're in the area, visit the Lowanna railway station where you will find the heritage passenger station, restored to its former glory with colour and love.

On to Ulong

Where you'll find the welcoming Cafe in the Valley, where they have visitor information and maps of the Coffs Coast. While you're there, talk to a knowledgeable local about the best fishing spots, 4×4 trails, swimming holes, and waterfalls at nearby Bindarri National Park.
